Air & Surface Purification by Ogena Solutions & Puraclenz

Puraclenz’s next-gen indoor purification technology started more than 10 years ago when a friend of one of their founders lost his life due to a Hospital Acquired Infection (HAI) and related malpractice. This event inspired a research dive into the growing problem of HAIs and the mounting death toll of over 100,000 annual US hospital patients and an estimated 1 million deaths globally.

The need for a low-priced, safe, and powerful solution became the mandate for the founders of Puraclenz. Further research led to a small company in Denver, Colorado (UVAIRx, Inc.) that had new ideas for improving the power and safety of the well-documented and proven photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) technology: the same technology used by NASA in the International Space Station (ISS) to provide healthier air for astronauts. Puraclenz’ founders provided UVAIRx, Inc with a substantial investment, as well as technical and management assistance. UVAIRx, Inc spent seven years developing and market-testing a new proprietary technology, for which they later received a US Patent. Under an Asset Purchase Agreement, Puraclenz acquired this patent and hired its inventor, Jerrod Keith, as VP of R&D. Puraclenz continued to add additional proprietary features to the patent and commenced the commercial development and production of this next-generation version of PCO technology.

The Puraclenz management team (Wendell Minnick, Chris Dooley and Jerrod Keith) have nearly three decades of experience developing and bringing to market consumer and industrial products applying advanced materials and proprietary designs. The team has an extensive history of leading proprietary industrial and consumer product development with such partners as DuPont, Lockheed, Corning, iRobot and Kodak, as well as inventing and producing numerous proprietary consumer products protected by global patents.

Puraclenz’ re-invention of interior air purification is well-timed to provide a powerful, low-cost and safe solution to help business and families combat the current global pandemic and any future viral-based threats.

When someone coughs or sneezes in a room being treated with passive air purifiers, such as HEPA filters, any pathogens (such as the virus that causes COVID-19) must move through the space back to the fan unit where it is captured by a filter.

While this approach is* effective, HEPA and other filtering systems must be sized and placed appropriately in order to be effective. With portable units, a separate unit is almost always required for each room. In contrast, the ions generated by the Puraclenz system are designed to deactivate pathogens efficiently before reaching other people in the room and a single unit can cover multiple rooms and up to 3,000 sq ft.

*Properly sized and placed HEPA systems have been shown to drop pathogenic loads in an indoor space by approximately 50% over a one hour period.

The underlying photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) technology (now advanced by Puraclenz) has been used successfully by doctors, dentists, nursery schools, fitness centers and millions of consumers around the world.

Traditional PCO technology has one negative aspect: it often utilizes ozone to increase its power to kill pathogens. Ozone is not a healthy addition to any indoor space, which is why the FDA limits ozone-producing products to .05ppm. Puraclenz has advanced and achieved patent protection for its new design because they found a way to generate powerful levels of ions without generating any ozone.

Using air as a medium to deliver ions allows the system to clean every exposed surface the air reaches, including hard to reach areas where contaminants may be found.
