How It Works




More than just an air purifier

While “passive” air purifiers filter pollutants through air circulation, our system is an “active” system and works differently by using an advanced form of photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) technology (originally used by NASA to provide safe air for astronauts aboard the International Space Station). Our Puraclenz powered active system produces an unprecedented volume of positive and negative ions for a PCO device resulting in greater cleaning coverage in a typical indoor setting thereby deactivating pathogens not only in the air around us but also that manual cleaning may have missed. PCO is a process similar to the one that occurs naturally when UV rays in sunlight react with air molecules in the atmosphere after a lightning strike.

This increased volume of (already present) ions** deactivates contaminants in mid-air. The Puraclenz technology was designed to deactivate pathogens before they reach other people in the room or settle on surfaces, or reach a traditional air purifier that utilizes filters. A single unit will clean the air and surfaces in a space up to 3,000 sq. ft, 24/7, with no training and minimal maintenance***.

Next-Gen PCO Air Purification
Puraclenz is an evolution of the technology used by NASA’s purifiers to increase the number of positive and negative ions in the air around us. All photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) processes (including the Puraclenz system) use an internal [UV light] that reacts with a titanium oxide surface (the catalyst) to produce the positive and negatively-charged ions that deactivate pathogens. This system stands out because it does so without the use of (or generation of) any ozone and because it produces an unprecedented volume of ions for a PCO device.


What are ions?
An ion is an atom or molecule that has gained or lost an electron, giving it a positive or negative electrical charge. When ions disperse throughout a space, they react with microscopic single-celled organisms to break down their cellular membranes and destroy the cell. After interaction, the molecules lose their electrical charge and are released back into the air as water vapor.

Traditional PCO systems have over 40 years of peer reviewed studies performed by third party independent labs and universities showing how effective they are at killing pathogens. Puraclenz’s ultra-efficient catalyst design means their products use UV lamps that neither use or produce any ozone at all.

Patented PCO technology
A U.S. patent protecting Puraclenz’s next-gen cell design was granted in 2020 and other world wide patents are pending. The multi-blade design is capable of reflecting UV light inside the core more efficiently than traditional systems. Unlike traditional designs, the system is designed so that each blade is shaped to reflect UV light onto the back side of the blade next to it, generating ions that will fill spaces up to 3,000 sq. ft. and over multiple rooms.

The unique aerodynamic conical shape further increases ion generation by increasing contact time with the reactive titanium oxide surface.

This revolutionary design provides a large and multi-room area of coverage against pathogens with arguably the smallest footprint and lowest energy consumption of any comparable product on the market.

Active Cleaning Technology

Using air as a medium to deliver ions allows the Puraclenz system to clean the air, including respiratory droplets and hard-to-reach surfaces missed by hand-cleaning or HEPA filters. This active process is scientifically proven by lab studies conducted with our products.

Traditional Passive Air Purification vs. the Puraclenz System

When someone coughs or sneezes in a room being treated with passive air purifiers, such as HEPA filters, any pathogens (such as the virus that causes COVID-19) must move through the space back to the fan unit where it is captured by a filter.

While this approach is* effective, HEPA and other filtering systems must be sized and placed appropriately in order to be effective. With portable units, a separate unit is almost always required for each room. In contrast, the ions generated by the Puraclenz system are designed to deactivate pathogens efficiently before reaching other people in the room and a single unit can cover multiple rooms and up to 3,000 sq ft.  

*Properly sized and placed HEPA systems have been shown to drop pathogenic loads in an indoor space by approximately 50% over a one hour period.
